At 8.30 we headed out to Chiswick to visit nephew Ger & Jana Hartwig with their sweetiepie daughter Olivia. What a wonderful neighbourhood! We had to have breakfast in Sam's Kitchen, because the Hartwigs are renovating and the house is a building site.

On the high street today there is an antiques market.

Now I get a chance to see the "building site". Wow, takes me back to 1982 when we did exactly the same thing - gutted the kitchen/dining area and lived, cooked and ate in our main bedroom for 3 months, our youngest being 2 years old.

Now we wend our way back home.

This afternoon, like on all Sundays, Rich and Ilse play D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) with 4 friends. So Ilse has baked a birthday cake for Rich: a granadilla cake. The granadillas we bought were so plump and brimming with juicy flavour that she only used four for the icing. It is also Arran's birthday today!

My task today was to make supper for us. I chose a Moroccan chicken tagine

with a cucumber and avocado salad on the side. Four hours of D&D is so draining that I'm very glad I offered to supply supper! By 8.30 we're all in bed. Wonderful day!

This morning Ilse and I took a stroll through the area towards Petersham Nurseries, a favourite haunt in this region of London. Ilse and Rich live in St Margaret's, a part of the borough of Richmond-upon-Thames, bordering on Twickenham, Isleworth and the south end of Kew Gardens. I wanted to explore the area a bit, and we did just that. On foot.  On the corner of the road is the rather lovely All Saints Church. We are heading straight for the Thames.  On the way we see lots of mansions with extensive gardens, and the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. Then we reach the river. The first bridge is Richmond Lock and Weir, a beautiful Victorian pedestrian bridge. This is the lock. Birdlife on the river: the cormorant, drying himself on the pole, looks as if he's saying "Come get yourself a big hug!" And this morning's outing was a BIG HUG to me. LONDON Sept 2025 - 10 September

I arrived at Heathrow just before 5 this morning, 10 Sept 2025, 45 mins early, which means Ilse wasn't there yet, but soon enough she came wafting through the door and happiness abounded!  We drove out of the airport at 6.30, no thick traffic to talk about yet - big bonus. And a beautiful sunrise to boot! After a very hot summer, London still manages to look verdant and lush.  What a wondrous moment it was when Ilse opened their front door in Haliburton Road:   they have created a beautifully serene home in St Margaret's for themselves. I was given coffee and then taken through the garden, pure magic! They have worked hard to achieve this little piece of paradise. Right at the end of their garden is a little side stream of the Thames, where herons and jackals roam. Rich and Ilse are working folks, and I have the freedom of the city! I have not had enough sleep to start roaming today, and it has started raining in sudden downpours, typical London weather! I'm gonna love it...

  After a day of intermittent showers of rain we have brilliant sunshine weather today. Everything is saying THANK YOU! Our day starts with a cup of coffee and a walk in the garden. It is still very fresh out. Every plant and flower gets noticed and lovingly appreciated. Then some work necessities, and at 10 we all pitch in to bring all the hedge cuttings together in armfuls and in a makulu size garden bag to be transported to the dump. We have an appointment at the dumps, a 10 min drive away, for 11/11.30. Once the car is stuffed with garden refuse, Ilse and I leave.  We pass over the Thames via Twickenham Bridge, pass all along the Mortlake Cemetery, a most beautiful old cemetery on green lawns, past all the old haunts of the Hobermans' Kew past, and deftly to the dumps, a road Ilse and Richard know in their sleep! These dumps have always impressed me no end: neat as a pin and very educational! On the way back we pass the entrance to Kew Gardens, another old favourite haunt....
